Too much humidity at home: 5 telltale signs

A house can feel damp even before a hygrometer confirms the problem. Persistent condensation, a musty smell, or deteriorating paint are all clues to investigate. Taken in isolation, they don't always identify the cause. When they recur or appear in several rooms, they warrant a more thorough investigation.

Dampness can result from daily activities, insufficient ventilation, infiltration, a leak, or rising damp from the ground. A dehumidifier can help manage excess moisture in some situations, but it does not repair a building defect. The priority is to observe, measure, and address the source.

## Sign 1: Persistent condensation on windows

A fine, occasional mist after a shower or cooking is not necessarily abnormal. It becomes concerning when it regularly covers the windows, forms drops on the frames, or persists long after ventilation.

Condensation appears when air laden with water vapor meets a sufficiently cold surface. Windows are often the first affected, but the phenomenon can also affect an exterior wall, a corner, or the back of furniture.

- does the condensation disappear after thorough ventilation?
- does it affect only one room or the entire dwelling?
- are the air inlets open and clean?
- is the bathroom or kitchen extractor fan working?
- is laundry regularly drying in the room?

Wipe away any water to prevent it from stagnating on wood or seals. Ventilate, heat at a reasonably stable temperature, and measure humidity at different times of the day.

## Sign 2: A recurring musty smell

A persistent smell of cellar, damp earth, or poorly dried textiles can indicate a lack of air renewal or damp materials. Closets, under beds, little-used rooms, and walls hidden by large furniture should be inspected.

Masking the smell with an air freshener solves nothing and can add substances to the air. Start by airing out and identifying the area where the smell is strongest. Remove textiles, check the back of storage units, and look behind furniture without damaging the coverings.

If the smell quickly returns despite ventilation and drying, a building investigation may be necessary. A slow leak or infiltration is not always visible at first glance.

## Sign 3: Visible stains or mold

Black, green, or whitish spots in a corner, around a window, or on a joint indicate the presence of microorganisms favored by humidity. Their appearance alone does not identify the cause or assess the situation.

Avoid dry-scraping a large area or applying improvised mixtures. For a small, superficial trace, follow the material's maintenance recommendations and protect yourself properly. If the surface is large, reappears after cleaning, or affects a porous material, seek professional advice.

Mold behind furniture often indicates a cold, poorly ventilated surface. Leaving a space between furniture and the wall can improve air circulation, but insulation, ventilation, and general humidity must also be controlled.

## Sign 4: Deteriorating paint, wallpaper, or wood

Peeling paint, detaching wallpaper, crumbling plaster, or swelling wood can be related to water. Observe the form and location of the deterioration.

A localized mark under a pipe or after rain may indicate a leak or infiltration. Deterioration at the bottom of a wall may have another origin. A large cold area covered with condensation rather suggests a surface problem and lack of air renewal.

Do not repaint until you have understood and dried out the cause. A new coating can temporarily mask the symptom, then deteriorate in turn. Document the evolution with dated photos and, if necessary, contact the owner, syndicate, insurer, or a building specialist.

## Sign 5: Laundry and textiles that remain damp

In an atmosphere laden with water vapor, laundry dries slowly and can develop an unpleasant odor. Towels remain damp, shoes dry poorly, and stored clothes feel cold or clammy.

Indoor drying itself releases humidity. If you cannot dry laundry outdoors or in an appliance that properly evacuates water, choose a ventilated room, space out clothes, and ventilate during and after drying.

A dehumidifier can accompany this occasional use if it is sized for the room and used with controlled doors and windows. It should not replace faulty ventilation.

## Measure rather than relying solely on feeling

A hygrometer allows you to monitor relative humidity. Place it at an immediate distance from a window, radiator, extraction vent, or dehumidifier, to avoid a too localized measurement. Record values in the morning, after showering, during laundry drying, and after ventilation.

Relative humidity varies with temperature: the same volume of water vapor does not produce the same value in cold air and warm air. Therefore, interpret measurements with the context, season, and recommendations of competent housing organizations.

A household appliance provides a trend, not a building diagnosis. If the signs persist, a single correct measurement is not enough to rule out a hidden problem.

## Find the cause before choosing a solution

Common causes fall into several categories:

- vapor produced by showering, cooking, laundry, and occupants;
- blocked air inlets or insufficient extraction;
- irregular heating creating very cold surfaces;
- plumbing or drainage leak;
- infiltration through the roof, facade, or joinery;
- rising damp from the ground;
- insulation or thermal bridge promoting condensation.

First, try simple actions: clear vents, use the range hood, close the bathroom door during showering then ventilate, maintain space behind furniture, and avoid obstructing air inlets.

Do not intervene on collective ventilation or a mechanical system without checking its operation and the housing rules.

## When to use a dehumidifier?

A dehumidifier is useful for removing water from the air in a closed room: occasional drying, a ventilatable but damp cellar, accommodation awaiting repair, or a seasonal peak. Choose its technology and capacity according to temperature, surface area, humidity, and noise level.

It should be placed with clear space around air inlets and outlets, away from water splashes, and used according to the instructions. Empty and clean the tank regularly or install drainage provided by the manufacturer.

## Act without waiting for damage to set in
